Module Overview / Introduction
This module enables learners to further develop advanced burn care skills and enhance the theoretical knowledge that underpins clinical practice (CC3N, April 2025). Credits achieved at Level 7 may be used towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice Programme. The module is hosted and delivered online by the London and South East Burn Network, with academic quality assurance and assessment oversight provided by UEA.
The curriculum follows the patient journey, beginning with the underlying pathophysiology of burn injury. This is followed by themed content covering:
· Prehospital burn care and initial assessment
· Early burn care and surgical management
· Reducing the burden of injury
· Holistic and global perspective of burn care
· Complex burn injuries and skin loss
Delivery is fully online. Most learning activities can be completed asynchronously, allowing flexibility to study at your own pace. Activities are varied and include recorded presentations, directed reading, video resources, podcasts, and reflective tasks. In addition, six online study mornings introduce each of the core themes and provide opportunities to engage with the module team and fellow students. There may also be opportunities to arrange specialist unit visits, subject to agreement with the clinical lead.
Module content is aligned with the British Burn Association National Standards for the Provision of Adult and Paediatric Burn Care (2023). Participants are required to undertake work-based learning throughout the module, aligned with the CC3N Advanced Burn Care Competencies (CC3N, 2025).

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
