Module Overview / Introduction
Policy is vitally important within all aspects of healthcare; in that it identifies a general plan of action in order to achieve the outcomes desired and is fundamental in decision making. While healthcare policy therefore underpins the delivery of high-quality care, the ability to achieve constant improvements in patient experiences also requires practitioners to translate policy to practice by utilising their expert power and negotiation skills. Working in such a way enables the development of a culture of creativity and innovation within teams, organisations and health systems, thus advancing practice. This module aims to enable practitioners to manage the business and resources (including people) to meet external targets and drivers by enhancing their understanding of how the political, policy and business drivers impact on the strategic operation, management and leadership of their organisation and healthcare. Within the module the role of creating a culture where innovation and change are a constant focus is explored, in tandem with the development of a reflexive approach to leadership. A combination of e-learning activities will provide the underpinning theories, and learners will be supported to explore personal challenges of leadership and management in relation to advancing both their practice and that of others.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
