Supporting families at the point of crisis; supporting Approved Mental Health Professionals to deliver integrated and preventative care

Researchers from the UEA School of Social Work & Sociology have been awarded funding from the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board's Research Capability Fund, to develop a NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research application.

Led by Dr Kate Blake-Holmes, the project explores how Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) can deliver family-focused, preventative support during Mental Health Act assessments.

In response to proposed reforms in the Mental Health Bill, the team will conduct a scoping review, national AMHP survey and focus groups. This will be done alongside community engagement with both adult and young carers, to co-produce research aimed at strengthening integrated and inclusive practice, and improving the experiences and outcomes for people and families affected by mental illness.

What's around the corner? How expectations affect visual scene processing

A researcher in the School of Psychology has recently been awarded a Leverhulme Trust grant of £98,000.

The project, led by Dr George Malcolm and with the support of a PhD student, will use an innovative combination of drawing and eye-tracking methodologies to investigate how our expectations about the world directly affects our ability to interpret the meaning of our environment.

By inducing expectations of an upcoming scene, the researchers will determine how prior information biases both local and global processing of our current visual perception. The combined results will help to redefine future models of visual cognition.
