Researchers in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics have been awarded £80,000 in funding for a new collaborative research project on brine solar pond thermal energy storage in Saudi Arabia.
Led by Dr Stefano Landini (PI) with Dr Jack Panter and by Dr Sarah Alshehri (PI) with Dr Samia Elattar at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, the project “BESSA – design and evaluation of Brine solar pond thermal Energy Storage from desalination plant waste for district hot water in Saudi Arabia” will assess the feasibility of using waste brine from desalination plants to deliver low‑carbon district hot water.
This research is supported by the British Council's Research Collaborations Programme Project No. 4896 under the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF).
