The University of East Anglia (UEA) has returned to the world’s top 300 in a leading university ranking table released yesterday (Tuesday 27 June).
The 2024 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings evaluates the impact of around 1,500 higher education institutions worldwide, with UEA’s position of joint 295th putting it in the top 20% globally.
The result was a rise of 47 places for UEA from last year’s 342nd, and represents the University’s highest QS World University Rankings position for five years.
The table measures institutional performance across a number of research and educational responsibilities, including research and discovery, employability and outcomes, learning experience, global engagement, and a new sustainability metric.
It was within the sustainability measurement, which evaluates the social and environmental impact of universities, that UEA scored particularly well, finishing just outside the top 100 worldwide in joint 123rd.
The University also moved back into the top 200 in the ‘Citations per Faculty’ metric, which is an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work produced by universities based on a ratio measuring the average number of citations obtained per faculty member. In total, UEA research was cited in over 180,000 academic papers worldwide, moving the University up to 164th (from 202nd last year), and 11th in the UK.
Prof David Maguire, UEA Vice-Chancellor and President, said: “For many years UEA has been a high-ranking university in UK league tables. Given our global outlook it is important that we also perform on the international stage. We have a richly diverse international community on campus, working on some of the world’s biggest challenges, and so we want UEA to be a name that is further recognised and respected worldwide.
“With that in mind, this considerable rise up the QS World University Rankings is excellent news and is testament to the hard work of our staff and students, as well as the reach and influence of the world-leading research taking place at UEA.”
The rise in the QS rankings caps off a highly successful June for UEA in a variety of league tables and outcomes. Earlier in the month, the Complete University Guide named it as one of the top 25 UK universities in their 2024 table, and UEA placed in the world’s top 40 in Times Higher Education’s Impact Rankings, which grades universities for their sustainability.
It has also been revealed in the last month that 84% of UEA’s 2020-21 graduating cohort were in professional work or further study 15 months after graduating, the University’s highest ever proportion in HESA’s (Higher Education Statistics Agency) annual graduate outcomes survey.
