Joe Ellis-Gage, Lecturer in Children and Young People’s Health and Nursing at UEA was named University Educator of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2025, from a tough field of finalists.
Joe, who joined UEA as a lecturer in 2021 as part of the Children and Young People’s Nursing team, is the force behind a hugely successful critical incident two-day simulation event which brings together some 200 people – including external partners, local schools, staff and students – to play the roles of patients and bystanders.

The judges said: “Joe has not only met but exceeded the award criteria, with glowing testimonials from both students and colleagues highlighting the exceptional impact of his work. While he humbly refers to them as 'the small things', his innovative teaching methods and unwavering pastoral support have made a profound difference to those he teaches.
"At the heart of everything Joe does is an unwavering commitment to enhancing the student learning experience. He is a truly inspiring educator who goes above and beyond – making a lasting impact through both his creativity and care."
Joe said: “I’m surprised but delighted to win this award which I couldn't have won without the ongoing support of my colleagues and our excellent students. I'm pleased our innovative teaching methods and supportive approach with students has been recognised by the judges.”
