Bowen Deng, also known as Karl, came to Norwich from Shandong, China.
After completing an SQA Advanced Diploma in Financial Services at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, he joined UEA on the 3+1 programme: a pathway that sees students complete three years at one institution and then transfer to a partner university, to finish their bachelor's degree in one additional year.
If you ask me about the greatest benefit of the 3+1 programme, I'd describe it as a "gentle but powerful transition into growth".
For students new to international education, transitioning from a local classroom environment to studying overseas can bring significant pressures, including academic adaptation, cultural adjustment, and psychological stress. The 3+1 programme offers a tailored and flexible approach, allowing students without prior exposure to international curricula to gradually embrace authentic British educational values while still in their home country.
This preparation is crucial, as studying overseas not only presents academic challenges but also involves managing potential risks associated with living in the UK and the emotional strain of culture shock. The SQA-AD programme is designed to address these issues effectively.
Before making my decision, I conducted extensive research and engaged in detailed conversations with Judy, the Chinese Admissions Officer at UEA. What ultimately convinced me to choose UEA was the evident rigour and seriousness with which UEA approaches student management and preparation.
Although my intake was the first cohort of SQA-AD students accepted by UEA, I felt assured by the University's thorough and efficient approach. Since arriving, this initial impression has only grown stronger.
UEA places considerable emphasis on continuously improving the student experience by actively engaging students in meaningful, two-way feedback. As a student representative on the Equality and Diversity Committee and a volunteer Student Liaison Assistant, I've supported Prof Yifan Chen in organising numerous feedback sessions. I've consistently been impressed by how swiftly and effectively the University responds to students' concerns.
In my experience, choosing Norwich Business School at UEA is ideal for students who seek both academic excellence and genuine humanistic care. Academically, UEA enjoys a strong reputation that, in many ways, exceeds its international rankings. Professors at NBS teach with a distinctive philosophy that genuinely inspires students' passion for academic exploration. Although this high academic standard can be demanding, it ultimately fosters critical thinking and encourages students to surpass their own expectations.
Beyond theoretical knowledge, UEA closely integrates teaching with practical application, emphasising career development and employability. The strong connections between the curriculum and industry mean the campus is full of opportunities for students to explore potential career paths.
Central to this is CareerCentral: a highly practical resource allowing students to optimise their CVs using AI, search for employment opportunities (whether full-time, part-time, or voluntary), and participate in employability-enhancing events. All these resources are instantly and easily accessible online. Trust me, even if you haven't previously felt an urgency around career planning, the proactive atmosphere at UEA will inspire you to enhance your professional skills.
Socially, UEA has genuinely exceeded my expectations. I've made friends I'll cherish for life here – particularly Ben, an international student from McGill University in Canada, and my roommate Mike, who’s currently ranked among the top 200 in the UK for the 100-meter sprint and studies chemistry. Ben and I share a common belief that choosing UEA was one of the best decisions we've ever made, and together we've created countless unforgettable memories, enjoying the vibrant diversity on campus where students from around the world gather to share their unique stories.
I vividly recall a rainy evening when the fireworks for Chinese New Year celebrations were unfortunately cancelled. Instead of letting disappointment set in, Mike accompanied me to the SU Bar, where we shared delicious pizza. Despite being more than 9,000 km away from home, Mike’s thoughtful companionship that night made me feel deeply warm and comforted. It's moments like these, filled with genuine friendship and heartfelt connections, that have truly deepened my love for UEA and Norwich.
Reflecting on these experiences, I'm reminded of an ancient Chinese poem: “试问岭南应不好,却道:此心安处是吾乡” – meaning “where the heart finds peace, there is home”.
After a busy week of lectures and assignments, the SU Bar and Blue Bar remain perfect places to unwind with friends, relaxing over conversations and a few drinks. When academic pressures mount or life feels overwhelming, the LCR offers a fantastic escape with its vibrant atmosphere, thrilling A-List events, and themed nights. Thanks to UEA's robust security, the venue genuinely feels like one of the safest pubs you could visit in the UK. On some nights, you can even grab a delicious late-night snack, like The Super Burger, at 2am as you head home; I always love ordering the double cheeseburger to soothe my alcohol-soaked stomach!
Living in Norwich has genuinely been one of the most enjoyable aspects of my UEA experience. The city effortlessly balances tranquility with vibrancy, combining historic charm, picturesque scenery, and a lively cultural atmosphere. Strolling down quaint cobbled streets or exploring local cafés and independent shops in Norwich Lanes has become a comforting weekend ritual.
Something that pleasantly surprised me upon arrival was just how pleasant and sunny the weather could be compared to the rest of the UK. It’s the sort of advantage you might not fully appreciate until you've experienced a British winter elsewhere, and it definitely makes daily life here brighter and more uplifting.
But even more than the sunshine, it's the people who make Norwich truly special. From the moment I arrived, I've encountered nothing but kindness, warmth, and genuine friendliness from locals and fellow students alike.
Even when travelling abroad, such as during my recent trip to France, I found myself proudly telling others about Norwich’s welcoming nature, reflecting just how deeply the city's warmth has impacted me. This friendly spirit doesn't just make life enjoyable; it profoundly shapes the culture at UEA itself, creating a compassionate and inclusive environment that has greatly enriched my university experience.
Norwich Business School and UEA have provided me with unparalleled support, beyond what I could fully describe here. Students have access to extensive resources, and almost any issue can be swiftly resolved via email or the efficient online chat service offered by the Student Information Zone (SIZ). Even complex concerns are promptly addressed, guiding students directly to the appropriate departments.
Once at 1am, I emailed the accommodation office requesting a mattress replacement, wall-cushion replacements, and thorough room cleaning. By noon the same day, staff had already visited my room, replaced the mattress, upgraded the showerhead and cushions, and meticulously cleaned the room using professional equipment.
For more complex or personalised support, students can also rely on academic advisors for individual meetings. In moments of uncertainty, my advisor Dr Siyao Zhu provided invaluable encouragement and guidance. Experiences like this underscore the strength of UEA’s support network and demonstrate how easily students can access the help they need.
Lastly, here are some practical tips for students considering the 3+1 degree programme or the BA International Business Management course at UEA:
1. Look into the UEA China Undergraduate High Achiever Award and do your best to secure this generous £4,000 scholarship. I was fortunate enough to receive this award in 2024 and encourage you to pursue it as well.
2. Fully utilise the official UEA website. If you ever feel uncertain or have questions, reach out to the Student Information Zone, as they're always incredibly helpful.
3. Be sure to explore UEA CareerCentral, where you'll find valuable employment resources and opportunities. Remember, the 3+1 programme is more than an academic qualification: it's a transformative journey designed to thoroughly prepare you for a successful global career.
