Social work is a highly rewarding profession. Social workers help and support the most vulnerable members of our society to overcome the challenges they face and to achieve their full potential.
Our students benefit from high quality teaching that emphasises the knowledge, skills and values of social work, especially the importance of relationship-based practice, combined with excellent placement opportunities that enable students to become confident social workers.
Our social work graduates go on to become first rate practitioners working with children and families, people with mental health problems, and older and disabled people in a wide range of statutory and voluntary agencies. We have a 100% Employment Success Rate (DLHE 2016/17 – six months post-graduation), and we are only one of two UK Schools of Social Work to be ranked Top 5 in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, The Complete University Guide 2019 and the Guardian University Guide 2019.
The School of Social Work is an internationally renowned academic department dedicated to research and teaching. We have a strong interdisciplinary focus with a reputation for policy and practice relevant empirical research and for research led teaching.
We host the Centre for Research on Children and Families, a key institution in the UNICEF Childwatch international research network.
The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) rank the School of Social Work 4th in the country for overall research with 90% of our research ranked “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”.
