2025/6 - AMAP6134A Sound on Screen (30 credit variant)
Autumn Semester, Level 6 module, Credits: 30 UCU, Media Studies
Organiser: Dr Alec Plowman
Assessment Type: Coursework and Assessment of Practice
Sound is one of the most important aspects of screen media. It is also one of the least discussed areas of media production. We assume that sound simply “happens.” In reality, it is meticulously considered, shaped and constructed. And, while a great sound recordist, designer or mixer can “make” a text through work that immerses the viewer in the story, bad sound breaks that immersion, regardless of how strong the visuals are. In this practical module, you will learn how to record and design sound for screen media. You will get hands-on experience working with sound in both the production and post-production stages, produce your own foley and sound effects, and interrogate how sound affects meaning. You will explore how different approaches to sound design can change the way an audience perceives film and television texts and put this into practice by designing and mixing sound for a short fiction or non-fiction film.
