Spring Semester, Level 6 module, Credits: 30 UCU, Media Studies

Organiser: Dr Geraint D'Arcy

Assessment Type: Coursework

Science Fiction (SF) has become a dominant genre across culture. It provides a significant focus for addressing the social, cultural and political issues of our times.  Using group research practices and continuous research communication, this module takes a thematic approach to the genre through themes such as Utopias and Dystopias, Robots and AI, Monstrousness and Otherness, Altered States and Minds, Destruction and Creation. Through these themes you will discover detailed and often surprising resonances with other concepts found across film, television, comics, and other media.  You will be taught by passionate SF experts and engage in individual and group research activities that develop the most desirable employer skills before honing them through independent student-led seminars, research analyses and group assessments. In Science Fiction, you will seek out and select your own key examples and texts, and study them in terms of the stylistic, social, industrial, and cultural contexts of their production and beyond.
