The idea of public visibility and celebrity is all around us and is a key driver of contemporary media content. But have you ever stopped to think about why we have celebrities and how they might be analysed? On this module you will explore the phenomenon of celebrity as it is produced, circulated and consumed, moving across social media, film, television and print forms. You will study the construction of celebrity culture and its relationships with power, taking in topics such the celebrity ‘image’; celebrity audiences and fans; Hollywood stardom; gender and celebrity; celebrity in politics; Reality TV fame to the rise of influencers. You will be assessed by a coursework essay in which you select your own celebrity case study to analyse.
