2025/6 - AMAM6070A Creative Work in the Media Industries (30 credit variant)

Spring Semester, Level 6 module, Credits: 30 UCU, Media Studies

Organiser: Dr Mark Rimmer

Assessment Type: Coursework and Project

What is it like working as a creator in the media industries? What are the key opportunities and challenges which face aspiring and established creative media professionals? This module offers you the opportunity to understand the industries in which you may well wish to work. Throughout you will explore the potential to find pleasure, fulfilment, and a steady income – as well as pressure, frustration, and precariousness – in creative media work. You will reflect on changes in the nature of work itself in modern societies and gain particular insights into work in the media and creative industries through an engagement with academic research, policy reports and the accounts of media workers themselves (across sectors such as digital media, film, television, music, magazines, and advertising). Having developed a grasp of some of the key dynamics involved in creative media labouring, you’ll put this knowledge into practice through research with a professional creative media worker of your choice (basing your final project on this). The module therefore not only provides you with a range of insights into the realities of creative media working, but also develops your skills in conducting research, organising and communicating your ideas and weighing your own arguments against those of others .
