What causes crime and what are the best ways to prevent and punish it? This module explores the ways in which the media addresses these questions, as well the media’s perceived influences on the propagation and perception of criminality. You will investigate a range of media and genres that focus on crime, investigation and the penal system, and explore how they incorporate scientific and technological innovations with regards to understanding and detecting crime. This includes: true crime podcasts and streaming series, forensic crime dramas, Yakuza films, psychological thrillers, Nordic noir, news media, and so forth. You will be introduced to ideas from a range of scholarly and professional fields, including film and television studies, media studies, sociology, criminology, psychology, and science and technology studies, and explore depictions of crime and punishment within intermedial and global contexts. At the end of the module, you will be able to undertake original comparative analysis of crime media texts and contexts.
