2026/7 – ENV-4016A Data and Research Skills A

Autumn Semester, Level 4 module, Credits: UCU 20

Organiser: Dr Amii Harwood

Assessment Type: Coursework

Timetable Slot: D

Data and research skills are essential across environmental sciences and geography. This module, as the first of a pair of First-year skill-focused modules, begins to explore how we can understand and solve real-world environmental challenges through multiple lenses - from field observation to mathematical modelling, from data visualisation to critical analysis. We encourage students to think deeply about why we choose certain approaches, helping develop both practical skills and broader critical thinking abilities. Our workshops blend hands-on fieldwork, laboratory investigation, and computer-based analysis. Students learn to collect data meaningfully, represent information clearly, and interpret results thoughtfully. We explore contemporary environmental and geographical problems through various perspectives, drawing on real research from the School of Environmental Sciences. The module is designed to bring out students' individual strengths. Some will excel at numerical analysis, others at spatial thinking, field observation, or data visualisation - we value and build upon these different capabilities. Through carefully structured activities and personalised support including an online mathematics platform, we help each student build confidence in working with data and develop their analytical abilities. Students will work both independently and in groups, learning to collaborate effectively while also developing individual skills. By the end of Data and Research Skills A and B, students will understand not just how to apply quantitative and/ or qualitative research methods, but why these approaches are valuable for addressing environmental challenges. These foundational skills in critical thinking, data analysis, and research methods provide essential preparation for both academic study and future careers in environmental science and geography.
