What better way to hear about what university is like, where you can go if you need help and what opportunities to get involved with, than hearing from the students themselves.
Hear from
Alex, a final year Computer Science (with a Year in Industry) student, from Gorleston, Norfolk.
Q&A:1. What did you study/do you study and how do you think it'll help you pursue your future plans? I studied a Level 4 course at college, which is similar to a foundation year. This was a great option for me as it gave me the confidence and skills I needed to get go to university. It also helped me to build a portfolio and gain more experience, which was really helpful when I applied for an internship.
2. Where do you reach out for support whilst at university? At uni, when I'm struggling with my studies there are lots of different options available depending on what my problem is. If I'm struggling to do work that's been set by a lecturer, I can ask for help from a lecturer themselves, in the lab sessions where the work is set. If I'm doing work at home I can always email my lecturers or teaching assistants, or message them on Microsoft Teams and I normally get a response back pretty quickly, and they're always really helpful.
If you're ever needing support whilst at university, there are support teams to help. I have previously reached out to the Wellbeing Team a couple of years ago when I needed support with my mental health. Overall I found that this was a good service as I was able to talk with someone who was very supportive and helpful. I was also offered resources and told about talks and workshops I could go to for extra support.
3. Are you part of any clubs or societies?I really recommend joining a club and or societies are great to get involved with. They're a really great place to meet new people and have fun, regardless of what year you're in or what subject you study. I'm a part of the Ballet club and the Ballroom and Latin club, and I also play on a UEA Esports team. I'm really glad I joined the sports clubs as its been a great way for me to stay motivated to do exercise as I'm doing it with other people. I also love going along to the club social events where I've made some new friends and have a lot of fun. Joining the esports team has been a great way for me to improve my confidence and another way to have fun with new people.
