A nutrition expert from UEA has been appointed as Chair of Public Health England’s new national committee helping to protect the public from misleading food marketing.
Prof Sue Fairweather-Tait has been announced as the Chair of the UK Nutrition and Health Claims Committee (UKNHCC) providing evidence-based scientific opinions to the UK government on any new nutrition and health claims made within England, Scotland, and Wales.
Prof Fairweather-Tait is an expert in human nutrition at UEA’s Norwich Medical School. Her main research interests are mineral metabolism and requirements, in particular iron, and she has published extensively in this field. She is also part of the university’s Norwich Institute of Healthy Aging - a new research centre investigating how we can live longer, healthier, and more satisfying lives.
All members are required to have a strong understanding of the public health aspects of their area of expertise as well as a track record of significant achievement and personal effectiveness in one or more of the specialist areas.
She said: “I am delighted to be on this new committee and honoured to be appointed chair. I will draw on my previous experience with the European Food Safety Authority, and follow the approach adopted by the UK chair of the Health Claims Working Group.
“Food is essential for life and choosing the right diet is important for preventing chronic diseases. Our role will be to protect the consumer by ensuring the accuracy of nutrition and health claims and facilitating the development of food products which will help improve the health of the nation.”
Eight independent experts of the committee have been announced today (29 October) and following the end of a transition period (1 January 2021), the UKNHCC will replace the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA).
