Evaluation of UEA's Interprofessional Schwartz Rounds
Training to become a health or social care professional can be rewarding but also emotionally demanding. At UEA, Interprofessional Schwartz Rounds (Rounds) offer a safe, supportive space where students and staff from different disciplines come together to share experiences from clinical practice and reflect on their emotional impact.
Our research project, funded by NICHE, set out to understand how Rounds support students’ well-being, reflective practice, and preparation for future careers in health and social care. We combined a systematic literature review, surveys from nine Rounds, and in-depth interviews with participants. Over 350 participants attended during the research period, and 164 completed evaluation questionnaires. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with 85% rating the Round(s) they attended as excellent or exceptional. Participants said Rounds helped them build emotional resilience, feel more connected to others across professions, and reflect more deeply on compassionate care.
Importantly, 70% of participants said they would like to see Rounds integrated in their training – from the early stages of study through to advanced practice. Students described the sessions as “thought-provoking,” “powerful,” and “a chance to feel less alone.”
Looking ahead, the recommendation is clear: Rounds should be sustained, expanded, and integrated into health and social care education, helping future professionals thrive in the realities of modern healthcare while staying grounded in the human side of care.
