IMPEDE-PKD: Implementation of Metformin theraPy to Ease DEcline of kidney function in Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial

IMPEDE-PKD is a global trial that will enrol people with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) from across the world including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. We plan to include 1174 participants worldwide and 300 of these will come from the UK.

Currently, there is only one licensed treatment (tolvaptan) available for people with ADPKD. It is only suitable for patients with more advanced stages of the disease and can cause troublesome side effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find better treatment options.

Researchers think a drug called metformin, which is currently used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, could help slow cyst growth and the related kidney damage in ADPKD patients. A large trial is needed to find out whether this is the case, which is why we are doing IMPEDE-PKD.

The aim of the study is to find out whether taking a metformin tablet(s) daily compared to a placebo “dummy” tablet(s) slows the rate of cyst growth and kidney function decline in people with ADPKD.
