Module Overview / Introduction
The Research Practice Portfolio module allows learners to gain academic credit for tailored research practice activity mapped against research development frameworks in their own professions/areas of practice under the guidance of both a practice-based facilitator and an academic supervisor. The module provides an ideal opportunity for learners to evaluate their current research knowledge and experience, to investigate ways to become more involved in research practice, to enhance areas of limitation and to critically reflect on, discuss and plan their ongoing research career/development objectives and aspirations. The learner and practice-based facilitator will together be responsible for organising the research practice activities identified as suitable to address the learner’s personal learning objectives.
This module requires the learner to be comfortable with independent learning and to actively participate in a community of learning with peers. Each learner is allocated an academic supervisor and will be expected to identify their own practice-based facilitator, with the support of their line manager where appropriate, who will work together and meet regularly to support the learner’s development over the duration of the module. Initial learning needs analysis will be informed by one or more research development framework aligned to the learner’s own profession, role or area of practice. There will be no formal taught component, but a bank of learning resources and activities to be accessed as required by each learner to support their personal critical enquiry and address their individual development objectives. Live online tutorials every two weeks with external speakers, peers and the module organiser will allow learners to share their learning and development in a supportive environment in which they will learn with and from each other. Assessment will take the form of a reflective portfolio, an oral presentation and an evaluative conversation, capturing critical reflection on a single transformational research practice experience encountered during the module.
When taken as a standalone Continuing Professional Development module, completion will enable those who do not currently meet the academic eligibility requirements to join a master's level programme to gain level 7 credit and therefore demonstrate their ability to study at this level. Academic credit can then be imported into either the MSc Health Research or the MSc Research & Quality Improvement in Health and Care as optional module credit.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
