FOI_26-211 Academic misconduct investigations and AI

We have now considered your request of 02 September 2026 for the following information:

Question 1. The number of investigations into AI-related academic misconduct for the academic years 2023-2024, 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 broken down by type of misconduct, department, campus/college, level of study / research (i.e. Master’s, PHD etc.) and outcome of investigation (i.e. warnings, expulsions, grade caps etc.)

Our response:

On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for the number of investigations into AI-related academic misconduct for academic years 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 broken down by type of misconduct, department, campus, level of study/research and outcomes of any investigations.

The University does not categorise or record Academic Misconduct investigations involving misuse of Artificial Intelligence specifically.

Investigations into academic misconduct would be recorded as Plagiarism, Plagiarism and Collusion or Collusion in line with University Policy - UEA PLAGIARISM COLLUSION, AND CONTRACT CHEATING POLICY – 2024/25 and General Regulations and Disciplinary Procedures.

Plagiarism Officers can access AI detection tools available, however, once a student has been thought to have mis-used AI within any submissions or is suspected of breaching General Regulations for Students relating to Plagiarism or Collusion, the referral to student disciplinary investigatory teams would be logged as such (suspected breach of General Regulations) and the investigation into academic misconduct is conducted to decipher if the student breached those regulations.

We do not record whether a student was investigated for AI-related academic misconduct.

Question 2. What technologies / systems have been brought in during those years as a direct result of AI-related misconduct.
