FOI_26-159 Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) teaching UG Medicine

We have now considered your request of 11 July 2026 for the following information:

I would be grateful if you could provide information regarding the inclusion and extent of teaching of eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) within your undergraduate medical curriculum. Specifically, I would like to request the following information:

Question 1. Whether eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is included in the undergraduate medical curriculum (Yes/No).

Our response:

Yes.

Question 2. If EoE is taught, then at what point in the curriculum is it taught, and is it taught across all 5 or 6 years of the course?

Our response:

It is covered in Year 3 of the 5 year MBBS course during the Digestive Disease Module.

Question 3. If EoE is taught:

a. The approximate extent of teaching:

             - Brief mention only

             - 1–2 slides

             - Dedicated teaching session

Our response:

2 slides in a clinical relevance case-based discussion about dysphagia.

    b. The format(s) in which it is taught:

            - Lectures

             - Case-based learning (CBL/PBL)

             - Other (please specify if applicable)

Our response:

Clinical relevance session. A case based discussion with accompanying slide deck.

     c. The context(s) in which it is taught (e.g. dysphagia, gastroenterology, allergy).

Our response:

Dysphagia.

Question 4. How the extent of teaching of EoE compares to that of the following gastrointestinal conditions:

     - IBD

     - Ulcerative colitis

     - Achalasia (e.g. more, less, or approximately the same level of coverage)

Our response:

Less than IBD.

Less than Ulcerative colitis.

Same level of coverage as Achalasia.

Question 5. How the extent of teaching of EoE compares to that of the following conditions in other specialities:

    - Multiple sclerosis

    - Sickle Cell Disease

- Sarcoidosis

Our response:

On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for comparisons for the extent of teaching of EoE against the teaching of Multiple sclerosis, Sickle Cell Disease and Sarcoidosis.

We do not record the comparisons, and details on our curriculum mapping software make it impossible to be able to provide an accurate comparison using the data we do hold.
