Date of response: 05 November 2025
We have now considered your request of 31 October 2025 for the following information:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I am requesting the following information regarding the use of AI writing detection or “AI plagiarism detection” tools at the University of East Anglia.
Please provide:
Question 1. The name(s) of any AI writing detection software currently used by the university.
Our response:
On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for the name(s) of any Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing detection software used by the University. The University does not use any such software currently.
Question 2. The date(s) when the software was first introduced or piloted.
Our response:
Not applicable.
Question 3. Any internal policy documents, staff guidance, or training materials relating to the interpretation or use of AI-detection results in suspected academic misconduct cases.
Our response:
On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for any internal policy documents, staff guidance or training materials relating to the interpretation of use of AI detection results in suspected misconduct cases.
We do of course have policy and other training materials related to detection of suspected plagiarism and collusion academic misconduct, but not specifically on use of AI-detection results, as we do not use an AI detection software specifically.
Question 4. The number of academic misconduct cases investigated between 1 January 2023 and 1 September 2025 in which AI writing detection software was used as part of the evidence.
Of those cases, how many:
a) Resulted in formal disciplinary action; and
b) Were later overturned on appeal (if recorded).
Our response:
Not applicable.
Question 5. Whether the university has conducted, commissioned, or obtained any validation studies, reliability assessments, or accuracy reports for the AI detection software used.
Our response:
Not applicable.
