FOI_25-168 General Practitioners employed by Norwich Medical School

Date of response: 30 June 2025

We have now considered your request of 04 June 2025 for the following information:

If possible, please provide this information for the most recent complete academic or financial year.

Please provide the following information regarding General Practitioners (GPs) employed on a fixed contract at your medical school:

Question 1. The current salary scales or pay bands used for GPs employed on a permanent basis at the medical school (e.g., Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor, or equivalent academic or clinical grades).

Our response:

GPs within the medical school are typically employed on standard clinical academic pay scales appropriate to the level of role being undertaken. Where employed on a fellowship that requires use of the salaried GP scale, this scale is applied in that particular circumstance.

Question 2. The average (mean and median) salary for GPs in each of these roles.

Our response:

On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for the average mean and median salary for General Practitioners employed in each of the roles noted in your request. The University do not categorise staff employed into those who are GP’s and those who are non-GP’s, therefore we do not hold this information and do not hold the mean salaries for GP’s.

Question 3. The standard pay progression structure for GPs in permanent posts – including increments, criteria for advancement, and any performance-related elements.

Our response:

Pay progression through increments is in accordance with the standard clinical academic pay scale structure.

The University has a promotions process which is open to both clinical and non-clinical academics for application.

Question 4. The number of GPs currently employed on a permanent basis by the medical school, broken down by job title/grade.

Our response:

On this occasion it is not possible to provide any of the requested information. In line with your rights under section 1(1)(a) of the Act to be informed whether information is held, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information for the number of General practitioners currently employed on permanent bases within the Norwich Medical School, broken down by job title/grade.

The University do not categorise staff employed into those who are GP’s and those who are non-GP’s, therefore we do not hold the information on the number of GP’s employed.

Question 5. Whether GPs employed at the medical school are entitled to clinical excellence awards or other clinical supplements, and how these are structured.

Our response:

Clinical excellence/impact awards are applied within joint appointments should the individual be in receipt of such an award. Flexible pay premia for trainees in academic posts will be applied in accordance with national guidance.

Question 6. Whether GPs are on the same contract and pay scale as secondary care based consultants

Our response:

Terms and conditions for academic staff are applied consistently across both GP and secondary care-based professionals. Pay will be on standard clinical academic pay scales appropriate to the level of role being undertaken. Terms that apply to contracts for joint employees will be applied consistently for those jointly employed by the University and a primary or secondary care organisation.
