EIR_25-123 Asbestos in University buildings and student bedrooms

We have now considered your request of 17 April 2025 for the following information:
Question 1. Is the university aware of the presence of asbestos in any land or property which is owned and/or managed by the university? NB: this should include all asbestos including asbestos which is appropriately managed and not regarded as a danger.
Our response:
Yes: The University East Anglia has known asbestos items within its building portfolio.
Question 2. If answer to above is 'yes': How many student bedrooms are known or suspected to have asbestos in them (or in the surrounding walls, ceiling, etc)? NB: "Student bedrooms" should be defined as any bedroom currently occupied by either undergraduate or graduate student(s) which is in land or property owned and/or managed by the university. As above, this should include asbestos which is not regarded as a danger.
Our response:
Zero. There are no student bedrooms which are known to or suspected to have asbestos in them, or in surrounding walls, ceiling etc, which are currently occupied by either undergraduate or graduate students.
Question 3. In the last three years, how many times has the University been made aware of accidental potential damage or disturbance of asbestos within property owned and/or managed by the university?
Our response:
In the last three years the University has been notified of and has records of six instances of accidental potential damage or disturbance of asbestos within property owned and/or managed by the university. Of those six potential disturbances, only one was confirmed to involve asbestos disturbance.
