EIR_23-270 Presence of asbestos in University buildings and student accommodation

We have now considered your request of 06 September 2023 for the following information:

Question 1. Do any of the buildings at UEA contain asbestos?

Our response: 

Yes. Of the 105 University buildings, a total of 50 buildings, including student accommodation, have been surveyed, due to the age of their construction, and all 50 have been found to contain asbestos in some form. 

Question 2. If yes, please outline how many university-owned buildings contain asbestos, which buildings these are and if any of these are student accommodation.

Please see accompanying document, our ref: EIR_23-270 Appendix A, for the list of those buildings affected and whether they are student accommodation/residential or non-residential. 

Question 3. Have there been any health problems as a result reported to the university in the last 10 years? Please detail how many and their nature.

Our response: 

On this occasion it is not possible to provide all the requested information. Under Regulation 12(4)(a) of the Environmental Information Regulations Act, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information which states whether any asbestos related health problems have been reported to the University in the last 10 years. 
We have therefore concluded that, at the time the request was received, the University did not hold the requested information for the purposes of the Environmental Information Regulations. 

Question 4. Has the university paid any compensation to students due to asbestos, and if so, how many and how much money in total in 10 years?

Our response:

On this occasion it is not possible to provide all the requested information. Under Regulation 12(4)(a) of the Environmental Information Regulations Act, we confirm that the University does not hold any recorded information which states whether any compensation related to asbestos was paid to any student(s) in the last 10 years.
We have therefore concluded that, at the time the request was received, the University did not hold the requested information for the purposes of the Environmental Information Regulations.
