Nine science researchers, based at Norwich Research Park including eight researchers from UEA, have been named in the annual Highly Cited Researchers list for 2021. The Clarivate Web of Science Group list, now in its eighth year, recognises the most influential researchers in the world. The list represents those researchers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their specific fields of expertise.
The citation analysis identifies influential researchers that is determined by their peers around the globe. Being highly cited in a particular research field is earned by delivering high quality research throughout a researcher’s career.
The UK has the third largest amount of citations with 492 researchers listed. The appearance of nine researchers from Norwich Research Park on the list is a measure of the exceptional impact that scientists based there are making globally.
The nine researchers named on the list and their areas of specialism are:
Plant and animal science
Professor Sophien Kamoun, The Sainsbury Laboratory/University of East Anglia - interactions between plants and filamentous pathogens
Professor Cyril Zipfel, The Sainsbury Laboratory/University of Zurich – molecular basis of plant innate immunity and how the perception of pathogen-associated molecules link to the establishment of immunity.
Professor Jonathan Jones, The Sainsbury Laboratory/University of East Anglia - how plants resist disease and how pathogens evade or suppress the detection and resistance mechanisms of their plant hosts
Geosciences
Professor Phil Jones, University of East Anglia – study of climate change and the detection and attribution of climate.
Professor Timothy Osborn, University of East Anglia– the variations in climate and understanding their causes, in terms of natural and human-caused climate processes.
Social sciences
Dr Tom Hargreaves, University of East Anglia - how different types of sustainability innovation operate in everyday settings and situations.
Cross-field
Royal Society Research Professor Corinne Le Quéré, University of East Anglia – the interactions between climate change and the carbon cycle.
Professor Robert Nicholls, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research – long-term coastal engineering and management, particularly the issues of coastal impacts and adaptation to climate change
Pharmacology and Toxicology
Professor David Livermore, University of East Anglia – the evolution and dissemination of antibiotic resistance and its relationship to antibiotic prescribing
The methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts from the Institute for Scientific Information at the Web of Science Group.
Prof David Richardson, Vice-Chancellor, said: “I’m delighted that UEA researchers have been recognised once again for their excellence in the fields of climate, plant and health sciences. Together with our partners across Norwich Research Park this demonstrates the research strength and outstanding achievements of the work undertaken, confirming Norwich’s national and global influence.”
David Parfrey, Chief Executive, Norwich Research Park said, “We are delighted that once again Norwich Research Park is being recognised amongst the most influential places in the world for the excellence of our science-based research. I would like to congratulate the nine researchers on behalf of all their colleagues on the Park. Recognition like this really does provide hard evidence the great scientific minds we are fortunate to have on the Park are truly global leaders in their fields.
“Achieving such a high number of citations and the recognition this gets is vitally important to Norwich Research Park as we embark on the next stage of our enterprise phase when we are looking to attract further inward investment and attract more businesses here which will ultimately benefit our region societally and economically by creating new jobs and commercialising the science developed here.
“The recent COP26 highlighted the immense challenges that we face to preserve life as we know it on our planet but thankfully we have so many scientists and researcher work to provide answers to many of these issues here at Norwich Research Park. We will continue to marry their ground-breaking research with innovative enterprise to achieve our Vision of changing lives, rethinking society.”
