UEA helps international football star find his voice in English

The University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Language Programme (ULP) has launched a tailored English language course for professional footballer Papa Amadou Diallo, helping him adapt to life on and off the pitch as he starts his contract with Norwich City Football Club.
Hailing from Senegal, Papa joined Norwich City FC in summer 2025, via France where he helped FC Metz gain promotion to Ligue 1. The 21-year-old has Wolof as his first language and developed strong French language skills while playing in France but arrived in Norwich with limited English language skills.
Norwich City FC approached the University Language Programme to provide bespoke language tuition, focused on integrating Papa with his team and the local community, and ensuring his understanding of communication during practice and games, and his ability to respond.
This is part of the Football Club’s commitment to player wellbeing, personal and professional development and team cohesion. The club is very keen to support Papa and for him to rely as little as possible on translation tools or interpreting on a day-to-day basis.
In response to the request, the University Language Programme has developed a bespoke programme of 1-2-1 teaching, helping Papa understand and take part in everyday conversations, as well as understand football-specific terminology.
In September, Papa unfortunately suffered an injury which will see him miss upcoming games. During this time, Papa will continue to work on his English tuition, through a tailored mix of online and in-person sessions.
Dr Roger Baines (Associate Professor in Applied Translation Studies at UEA), who has conducted research into translation and interpreting in the football industry, says:
“Relocation is a stressful and challenging process for migrant professional footballers moving to a new country as they deal with culturally complex interpersonal environments, and good communication is absolutely key to players feeling comfortable and performing well.”
This partnership between UEA and Norwich City FC reflects the important role that language learning plays in professional sport, not only improving team communication and player wellbeing but also enhancing career prospects and community integration. It highlights the value of universities like UEA in supporting real-world needs through flexible, purpose-driven teaching, while strengthening partnerships between academic institutions and local organisations.
The University Language Programme offers evening classes to the public, daytime tuition to UEA students, and entirely bespoke classes for any business needs.
