The University of East Anglia (UEA) has become an accredited real Living Wage employer and will immediately pay its employees the voluntary living wage rate of £9.00 an hour.
The real Living Wage is an independently set hourly rate of pay, calculated according to the basic costs of living. It is currently set at £9.00 an hour for employees across the UK. It is updated annually and employers pay it on a voluntary basis.
The Living Wage Foundation announces living wage rates in the first week of November each year and the university is committed to implementing that rate in common with other voluntary living wage employers.
UEA Vice-Chancellor Professor David Richardson said: “We know all our staff, across our faculties and our professional services, are essential for the continued success of our university and the experience of our students.
“By becoming an accredited real living wage employer it is the right thing to do by our staff and it will benefit the wider community as well.”
Katherine Chapman, Living Wage Foundation Director, said: “We’re delighted to see UEA sign up as a real Living Wage employer. It joins over 5,000 responsible businesses that have recognised that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. The decision shows UEA’s commitment to the wider community. We look forward to seeing many more organisations within East Anglia and beyond, including universities, sign up to pay a real Living Wage that covers the cost of living.”
