A boost to the number of Academic Clinical Fellowship and Clinical Lectureship posts at the University of East Anglia (UEA) will support research into subjects including long-term health conditions and dementia.
UEA has been awarded 12 Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) posts and 4 Clinical Lectureship (CL) posts for 2024-26 by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
The posts give trainee doctors the opportunity to develop their research or teaching.
Some of the posts will focus on dementia, multiple long-term conditions, digital technology and prevention and public health.
Prof Vass Vassiliou, Director of the Norwich Academic Training Office, Norwich Medical School said: “We are thrilled with this result, as it underscores our commitment to enhancing academic training in Norwich. These positions, fully funded by the NIHR, will allow trainees to receive exceptional clinical and research education, fostering the development of future leaders.”
Prof Charles ffrench-Constant, Pro-Vice Chancellor at Norwich Medical School, said: “This is great news for UEA and for partners across the Norwich Research Park. With new Government commitments in its NHS Long Term Workforce Plan to increase numbers of doctors over the next 15 years, it’s great that we have been awarded these roles to develop those who will teach the medics of the future.”
Prof Erika Denton, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Medical Director, said: “This is fantastic news and builds on our important partnership with the UEA. Evidence shows the more research active a hospital is, the better the outcomes for patients. It is particularly exciting to be involved in more academic research and to develop skills to help improve patient care.”
