New Director of Music appointed at UEA

Bjorn Bantock has been named as the new Director of Music at the University of East Anglia (UEA).

With an extensive background in music performance, education, and leadership, he brings a dynamic vision and wealth of experience to the role.

In this position, Bantock will be responsible for the operation of the Music Centre, as well as pursuing and developing its aims of maintaining music as a vital part of university life and of UEA's connection to the local and the wider community.

An internationally acclaimed conductor with more than 30 years of professional experience leading a diverse range of orchestras and ensembles across the globe, he is renowned for his dynamic performances and dedication to music education. He has conducted in many different countries including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Russia, Malta, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

Speaking on this new appointment, Bjorn said:

We aim to create opportunities for everyone – regardless of background, experience, or musical preference – to participate in our programs, ensembles, and events.

A wealth of experience

Bjorn’s extensive career encompasses principal conducting roles, guest appearances, festival leadership, and a commitment to nurturing emerging talent through masterclasses and educational initiatives.

He currently serves as the Principal Conductor of the Irish Memory Orchestra, leading tours across Europe, Ireland, and South Korea. He is also the Principal Conductor of the Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the Peterborough Philharmonic Orchestra and, at the Open Strings Festival in Denmark, he holds the position of Principal Conductor and Head of Conducting.

As a founding member, Bjorn is the Principal Conductor of the International String Orchestra Festival in Malta, featuring soloists Matthias Wollong, Yuko Inoue, and Mats Lidström. He also serves as Principal Conductor for the Svanker Music Festival in Denmark and the Alpine Summer School Orchestra in Geneva. Additionally, Bjorn is the Principal Conductor and founder of the London Chamber Strings, showcasing London’s finest string professionals, and he regularly conducts the Hertfordshire Philharmonia.
