A globally-influential University of East Anglia (UEA) scientist will explore the solutions to climate change at a special Norwich Arts Centre event this month.
Prof Corinne Le Quéré, Royal Society Research Professor of Climate Change Science at UEA, will appear as part of the Green Shoots series, in conversation with Prof Steve Waters.
The event on Wednesday 24 June will bring together climate science, policy insights and a few surprising anecdotes from the life of a scientist - offering a personal and expert perspective on one of the world’s biggest challenges.
The central message of the night is that fixing climate change may be more achievable than often thought.
Prof Le Quéré’s research has helped explain how climate change affects land and ocean carbon sinks and identify the drivers of CO₂ emissions.
She has also played a major role in shaping climate policy, serving on the UK Climate Change Committee for a decade and as founding president of France’s High Council on Climate.
Prof Corinne Le Quéré, from UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said: "I look forward to an evening of discussion on what to do about climate change. I have had the privilege of meeting some interesting and engaged policymakers through my work, and I am keen to share some of the things I have learned from them.
“I am equally keen to hear what the concerns are today from the audience, and to help think collectively how they might be resolved. I am sure the evening will be stimulating, and I can think of no better place for it than the Norwich Arts Centre.”
Prof Steve Waters from UEA’s School of Media, Language and Communication Studies, said: “As a playwright and board member at the Norwich Arts Centre I have been keen to bring leading figures in the world of climate change in front of a general audience in a time when it feels like the challenges are getting graver yet the debate cruder.
“I was delighted when Corinne, who I admire greatly, agreed to contribute and I think audiences will be enlightened and stimulated by an evening of personal, political and scientific reflection from one of the world's leading figures in climate policy.”
Green Shoots is a Norwich Arts Centre series bringing leading thinkers, writers and scientists to the city to explore urgent global challenges, offering audiences fresh ideas, informed debate and hopeful perspectives on the future.
A former director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and contributor to multiple Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, Prof Le Quéré’s work has helped shape global understanding of climate change.
The event takes place at Norwich Arts Centre at 8pm on Wednesday 24 June.
A student-led initiative at the University of East Anglia has received a prestigious international award for its work producing subtitles for charities and nonprofit organisations.
