The University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Law School has been ranked 55th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings subject tables, it has been announced today.
Polly Morgan, Deputy Head of the UEA Law School said: “I'm delighted that UEA Law School has been so highly rated in the THE world rankings. It reflects our status as a TEF gold university that also undertakes world-leading research, as well as my colleagues' hard work in helping our students to make a positive contribution to society, whether that is in the UK or in the many countries from which our students join us.
“We take approximately 160 students each year across our three undergraduate programmes, LLB Law, Law with American Law, and Law with European Legal Systems. We are therefore quite a small law school, which means that students are part of a tight-knit community.”
The school, which is based at Earlham Hall in Norwich has a Law Clinic where students offer free legal advice and assistance to the local community, while gaining valuable hands-on experience of the law in action. It is estimated that students have successfully recovered £4.5 million of welfare benefits for claimants in Norfolk who were wrongly denied the benefits for which they were eligible.
Last week a new purpose-built law clinic opened at Earlham Hall, which will enable the clinic to continue to help local people. In December 2017, Lord Howarth spoke of the pro bono work of UEA Law students, in his speech on the Right to Justice Report, in the House of Lords.
Many students are also part of a thriving Law Society, who were awarded 'Best Pro Bono Activities' at the LawCareers.Net Student Law Society Awards in March this year. They practice mooting, negotiations, interviewing and mediation.
UEA Law graduates have gone on to work for leading London and international firms including Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Clyde & Co and Eversheds Sutherland. Others work as in-house counsel in limited companies, the Government Legal Service, public authorities, and the civil service.
UEA’s social sciences courses were ranked in the 101-125 place category, education came in between 251-300 and Business and Economics was 176-200.
The subject-specific tables follow the publication of the overall THE World University Rankings 2019, which was revealed on 26 September. The subject rankings are based on the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2019, but the methodology is recalibrated for each subject to suit the individual fields.
The Right Honourable the Baroness Hale of Richmond, former President of the Supreme Court, and one of the country’s most high profile and renowned judges of our time will deliver a talk to UEA Law School and Norfolk and Norwich Law Society
