Insights into past leaders of the main UK political parties are revealed in two new books edited by an academic from the University of East Anglia and former Home Secretary and visiting professor Charles Clarke.
The books, published this month, examine the success and failure of former leaders of the British Labour and Conservative parties, and feature exclusive interviews with some of them, such as Tony Blair, Neil Kinnock, Michael Howard and William Hague.
Published by Biteback Publishing, the books consider the attributes and achievements of each leader in the context of their respective time and diplomatic landscape, offering a compelling analytic framework by which they may be judged. They also include General Election league tables by which they can be compared and detailed personal biographies from some of the country’s foremost political critics.
Dr James said: "The books show that British history often hinges on the strategic successes and gaffes of political leaders. We set out five key tests that a leader must fulfill if they are to be successful. These are challenges relevant for all of the leaders of the parliamentary parties."
Titled British Labour Leaders and British Conservative Leaders, they aim to contribute to public understanding of British political history and governance through the prism of those who created it.
British Labour Leaders, edited by Charles Clarke and Toby S James, and British Conservative Leaders, edited by Charles Clarke, Toby S James, Tim Bale and Patrick Diamond, are part of a three-book series, which also includes British Liberal Leaders, edited by Duncan Brack, Tony Little and Robert Ingham.
