130 writers and translators from 23 countries to visit UEA

At the end of July, the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the acclaimed BCLT Summer School. Literary translators and authors from around the world will spend a week at UEA exploring translation and creative writing.
Anna Goode, BCLT Managing Director, said: “The annual BCLT Summer School is a vibrant celebration of international literature.
“It is regularly heralded in the industry as a key development opportunity for emerging translators and has helped launch the careers of many award-winning professional literary translators, such as Anton Hur (shortlisted for and recently judged the Booker International prize) and Sawad Hussain (Shortlisted for the National Book Award and winner of an English PEN award).
“In a time marked by cultural divides and global uncertainty, literary translation is more vital than ever – it opens windows into other worlds, fosters empathy across borders, and ensures that no voice is lost.”
This year, the Summer School – in partnership with the National Centre for Writing – will be welcoming prominent writers from Belgium, Denmark, Paraguay, Poland and Switzerland, and the translators will spend the week translating their work into English.
The week also includes industry events that are free for the public to attend. You can register for these events via the BCLT website. The Summer School will be taking place in-person from Sunday 27, July to Saturday 2, August 2025.
Spanish-English workshop
In particular, the Spanish-English workshop this year is part of an impact project, funded by AHRC IAA (Impact Acceleration Account), to train Spanish to English literary translators with an interest in working collaboratively on translation from Spanish and Latin American indigenous languages – in this case, Guaraní.
The translators will be working with poet Susy Delgado (National Poetry Prize, Paraguay) on her latest collection called Tatatinangue (2023), written in Spanish and Guaraní.
The workshop will be led by Prof Cecilia Rossi (UEA’s School of LDC) and Juana Adcock, a poet and translator writing in both English and Spanish. They will introduce participating translators to the translation strategies and ethical approach needed to work from a Spanish translation of an indigenous language text, as well as offer training on writing about translation process and the production of paratexts.

The BCLT team work with cultural and literary organisations, embassies and publishers from around the world, to build a week packed full of translation, collaboration, learning, networking and creativity.
They get to share the best of UEA and Norwich with a truly international community of writers.
