Submissions are now open for the East Anglian Film Archive’s annual Mashup Filmmaking Competition. The first of its kind in the UK, the competition has been running annually since 2014.
Entrants are given a unique opportunity to re-purpose film from the archive’s collection to create a new short film – a ‘mash-up’.
Each year EAFA provides a specially curated package of film taken from the many thousands of hours held by the archive documenting life across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. As well as fresh material, each year brings a new theme. This year’s theme is “Home”, a theme that was decided upon some months ago, and now seems particularly pertinent. The competition package for 2020 (pre-viewable here) is made up of excerpts from home movies amateur films, local life, advertisements, industry films, and more.
Dr Tim Snelson, EAFA Director, said: "The competition offers new and innovative ways for EAFA to engage with the public. The filmmakers of today are being given an opportunity to take ownership of and engage creatively with their film heritage. Anyone with an idea, a digital camera or smartphone and a few hours can create something unique, to encourage a new way for us to look at the original footage.”
Kate Welsh, Programme Delivery Coordinator for INTO Film commented “It’s always a pleasure to advocate for the EAFA mashup as it is central to our own mission: to inspire future filmmakers and dynamic ways of engaging with film. The Mashup offers a fascinating window into the history of film and offers young people a chance to showcase their creativity”
The competition brief is simple. Make a short film between 1 and 5 minutes in duration. Entrants must use at least 50 per cent EAFA archive material and if they wish they can combine the archive films with material they have shot themselves, or use audio-visual material sourced from elsewhere.
Anyone inspired by archive film can enter, whether complete novice or accomplished professional. There are two categories, ‘Under 18s’ and ’18s and Over’ and the lucky winner in each category will receive a £250 cash prize and a year’s subscription to Little White Lies film magazine. The winning films will be screened at the Norwich Film Festival and will be added to the archive’s collections and preserved for the region.
Craig Higgins from Norwich Film Festival said "It is always an absolute pleasure to team up with the brilliant East Anglian Film Archive and support the most awesome Mash Up competition around. Each year there is always a wonderful array of submitted films to this competition and we cannot wait to see what comes through for 2020. Get making, Get Creative and Get Submitting!"
