In order to lift their probationary status, PhD students are required to pass a formal assessment. Besides the mandatory elements mandated by the Faculty of Social Sciences, within ECO this assessment is complemented by an oral presentation, which normally takes place in the form of a short seminar as part of the Annual First Year PhD Students’ Mini-conference. The students are requested to discuss their research to date and to present an outline of the remainder of the thesis.
Should a student not be able to pass the probationary review on the first attempt, a further meeting will be organized in September, and an additional presentation in front of the School will be arranged.
For PGR students who start their PhD in January, the first Probationary Review Meeting usually takes place in September, leaving time for a potential second attempt in December.
