Emeritus Appointments

In recognition of distinguished service to the University of East Anglia, the title of Emeritus Professor or Associate Professor may be conferred on a Professor or Associate Professor of the University at or after retirement. 

Recommendations are invited annually from Heads of Schools, considered by the Honorary Degrees and Appointments committee and recommendations approved by Senate. 

  1. There are no expectations of work placed on Emeritus Professors/Associate Professor. The title is purely honorary. Some Emeritus Professors/Associate Professor choose to remain involved in the University's development on a voluntary basis.
  2. Emeritus status does not prevent a Professor/Associate Professor being paid for any occasional work they are requested to do by their school. (Any payment would be on terms made in agreement with the school and individual.)
  3. Emeritus Professors/Associate Professor should use the title "Emeritus Professor” or “Emeritus Associate Professor” in any correspondence or website or other forms of communications so that the audience is clear that their association with the University is honorary.
  4. Emeritus Professors/Associate Professors should exercise care in their use of the title of Emeritus Professor/Associate Professor when making public statements since they are not authorised to speak on behalf of the University.
  5. The title Emeritus Professor/Associate Professor will allow the retiring professor/reader to maintain their IT and Library access but it does not confer any rights to an office or desk space.
  6. Emeritus Professor/Associate Professor status does not confer any entitlement to serve on any University Body or to exercise any administrative or executive function.
