What is Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi factor authentication (MFA) is an additional level of security for your UEA IT account. Alongside your username and password, MFA helps protect your data and that of the University.

It is a simple two step identity verification process which combines something you know (in this case your username and password) with something you have (in most cases a notification received on an app on your mobile phone)

How do I get it?

When you first log in to UEA services, you will be prompted to set up a method of authentication. The UEA recommended method is the Microsoft Authenticator app, which you can download onto your phone from the Apple or Google store.

To set up the authenticator app, follow this video guide:

How do I use it?

For details on how to setup and use your method to respond to an MFA prompt, see the guides below.

What if I change my mobile device?

When you change the device you use to authenticate, you will need to remove the method that you registered with Microsoft, before you set up the app on your new device. The guidance will take you through how best to do this:

Self Service Password reset and account unlock

Once you have set up a method of authentication, you are then able to reset your password or unlock your account. When you see a link to Forgotten password or Reset your password, click to begin the process.
