Embedding employability within modules

Modules on our engineering courses are designed so that employability is an integral part of the teaching. This includes the development of skills such as team working, networking, problem solving and risk management alongside written and oral communication – regarded as one of the most important skills by our industrial advisory board.

We also host a number of guest lectures from industry professionals within modules, to reinforce material taught in classes and show its industrial application. The lectures are then complemented by industrial site visits to gain a real practical appreciation of engineering problems and their solution. In several cases the input from industry is used to form coursework with industry involved in giving feedback.

Projects and Dissertations

Students on BEng, MEng and MSc courses all undertake project work as part of their degree. Projects may have an industrial component proposed by industry or may allow you to follow a real engineering challenge that you are particularly interested in.

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Engineering and Computing Science students at UEA can now benefit from free membership of the IET because UEA is an Academic Partner.  Our academic contact is Dr Salman Abdi Jalebi.

Energy Institute Affiliate Member

The Faculty of Science at UEA is a Learning Affiliate of the main professional institution in the energy sector, the Energy Institute (EI).  This benefits our students in many ways such as:

  • Free student membership with a free magazine
  • Access to learning resources both online and via the EI library
  • Opportunities for CPD via branch meetings and site visits
  • Information about topical EI courses
  • Young engineers’ network via Essex and East Anglia branch

There is much more information on the careers section of the Energy Institute website. Dr Sonia Melendi-Espina is our academic liaison with the Energy Institute, who would be pleased to help you with any questions you may have.
