The domain, with its focus on education policies and practices in the Global South hosts the prestigious UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation as well as extensive work in the realities and policies of education and lifelong learning in international contexts.

Our domain hosts expertise within most of the major social science disciplines, and has developed an international reputation in qualitative and participatory methodologies. We engage through research, consultancy and training with practitioners, research institutes, overseas governments, international agencies and National Governing Organisations, extending the impact of our research well beyond academic communities.

Core members of the domain lead the School’s research focus on: lifelong learning, adult literacy, community learning  and international development; higher education in international contexts; and on social justice and social mobility around the world.
