In 2023, the Sainsbury Centre became the first art museum in the world to recognise art as alive.

The art on display here is a living representation of some of the greatest individuals, movements and societies that have ever existed on the planet.

New displays, exhibitions, resources and activities invite you to connect with art much more like you would another person than an inanimate object. The art of the Sainsbury Centre can help reframe and answer the most important questions people have in their lives. It is a place of experience, to witness the effects of substance abuse, uncover how to adapt to a transforming planet, understand why people kill each other and visualise the origins of a globalising world.

The centre itself houses the university’s Art History and World Art Studies department and the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Oceania, Africa and the Americas.
