Our Sustainability, Utilities and Engineering Department delivers projects behind the scenes to support the University in reducing its environmental impact and increasing energy efficiency.
We work closely with staff and students to share best practice, support behaviour change and strategies, towards a sustainable UEA.
Energy and Carbon Reduction

Richard Bettle, Energy and Utilities Manager
I am responsible for managing our targets around energy and carbon reduction, as well as the technology and other systems that deliver the energy produced by our combined heat and power engines on site. I manage the electricity and gas utilities budgets and support initiatives to make efficiencies across campus. -
Jeremy Carter, Assistant Energy & Utilities Manager
My role includes identifying energy and water reduction opportunities. I do this by analysing consumption and undertaking audits. Once a project has been identified I am responsible for business case development, securing buy-in, and project delivery. I am responsible for forming strong cross-departmental relationships that enable the adoption of more efficient technology and better ways of working. A large part of my role involves improving the quality of utility data we use to make tactical decisions.
Engineering and Infrastructure

Oliver Cozens, Senior Engineering and Infrastructure Manager
As a building services engineer I have a broad responsibility for management of the various mechanical and electrical systems in use across the campus, including the district heating and cooling systems. I work closely with the Estates Maintenance team to ensure that plant and building services are operated and maintained in a safe and efficient manner. I also assist the Estates Helpdesk team to respond to customer queries and resolve operational issues relating to building services. -
Scott Hurkett, Engineering & Infrastructure Manager (Mechanical)
As a mechanical services engineer with over 25 year's experience in Estates Healthcare sector, I provide support and management of all mechanical services such as ventilation, heating, cooling, gas, and water systems. I work closely with the Estates Maintenance and Projects teams to ensure smooth efficient and reliable running of the university's mechanical infrastructure services and am also responsible for the management of engineering assets. -
Steve Edwards, Electrical Services Infrastructure Manager
My role within the team is to look after the University's electrical infrastructure. This ranges from our 11,000v high-voltage network down to the socket outlets that supply our desk PCs. I also work closely with the Maintenance and Helpdesk teams in resolving issues that arise, such as problems with internal and external lighting complaints. Other areas that I am involved with across the campus are the fire alarm systems, refuge systems, lifts, and access control. -
Shawn Curson, Engineering and Infrastructure Manager (Mechanical)
I am responsible for the management of a wide range of mechanical systems across campus. This includes the district heating, cooling, gas and water supplies to name a few. I work together with maintenance, projects, BMS, and Helpdesk to ensure that all the plant and site infrastructure continues to work efficiently, reliably and safely, and towards our goal for a carbon neutral campus. -
Mark Provis, Building Surveyor (Secondment)
As a Building Surveyor I have a wide range of knowledge on the construction, fabric and infrastructure within buildings and I assist with the investigating and diagnosis of faults and issues across campus that are not easily resolved by in-house operatives. This includes water ingress and replacement of key building components that are at the end of their economic life. I work closely with Maintenance and Projects to ensure works are completed to the required standard.

Building Management Systems
The BMS team work closely on projects related to energy reduction, such as the big Holiday switch off.
Carlos Merchan, BMS Developer
Responsible for developing our Building Management System (BMS) into a user-friendly tool, which will help Estates to better integrate building maintenance, energy management and user controls. As part of this remit, Carlos manages the production of technical strategies, budget, and project delivery.
Simon Ward, BMS Engineer
Responsible for managing the day to day operation of the Trend BMS. This involves writing and modifying the Trend software, rectifying reported faults and proactive maintenance works to ensure efficient operation of the BMS. Simon works closely with the energy reduction teams to improve environmental conditions and energy usage throughout the campus.
Biodiversity

We manage the campus green spaces with focus on using sustainable methods within our conservation areas. Our conservation guidance is set within two areas, Natural England Higher Level Stewardship Scheme and the University Biodiversity and Landscape Management Plan. We actively seek new ways to improve our operational service to be more sustainable.
Waste Reduction & Reuse
Tom Bohan, Waste and Recycling Manager, T.Bohan@uea.ac.uk
Responsible for managing the university's waste and recycling by collaborating across departments developing new strategies and management plans, ensuring UEA is at the forefront of waste minimisation and compliance excellence. Overseeing the day to day functions including the procurement and management of waste contracts, acting as the single point of contact for waste and recycling enquiries and the acquisition and reporting of all related data.
Travel and Transport team
The team administrate the car park permitting system, and support staff and students in getting on and off campus by more sustainable means.
Aaron Grant, Head of Security & Transport
Responsible for creating and updating the travel strategy and to promote sustainable travel for UEA, liaising with bus companies and active travel promoters. Also linking with the wider community, including Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich Research Park and Norfolk County Council.
Davey Whales, Security and Transport Operations Manager
Responsible for overseeing the Travel and Transport team in implementing the current UEA travel strategy and current sustainable travel options.
Charlotte Melling, Lodge Co-ordinator
Responsible for implementing day to day travel to and around campus, including active travel options, public transport, personalised travel plans and parking.
