Your University Questions, Answered.

How can I make the most of attending a UCAS exhibition? Tom, London

Our Answer:

Think of a busy market place, where traders vie to get you to see their best deals. A UCAS exhibition is very similar, but with less shouting! Universities from around the UK will have a stand, with prospectuses laid out and experts on hand to help you make an informed choice about what and where to study.

It’s probably the only time all the big universities will be in your area, so here are our top six tips to making the most of it…

  1. Get a good night's sleep
UCAS exhibitions are usually quite large and you’ll be on your feet all day! Make sure you wear comfy shoes and pack some water and a snack.
  2. Pick up an exhibition guide
These handy guides list the locations of the stands, a seminar timetable and other information about the day. Make sure to look through these and make best use of the time available.
  3. Do your research
Research which universities teach the course you’re interested in before you go and find out more about it. Not sure where to start? Read our guide to choosing the right course.
  4. Have some questions ready
Prepare a list of questions for universities so you can compare them later. Make a note of key information like Open Day dates, entry requirements, and how your course is taught.
  5. Take a sturdy bag
Almost every university produces a prospectus, which contains information about all the courses they offer. Bear in mind that prospectuses are usually quite bulky, so be prepared and bring a bag or two.

Many universities will have enquiry forms for you to fill out. Keep a look out for these and get prospectuses and course information sent to you – it’ll save your arms!
  6. Follow up
When you get home make sure you follow up any enquiries you’ve made. Also, research the courses and universities you really liked. Look at UniStats, University Guides and Student Experience Surveys. For example, UEA is a UK Top 20 university (12th in The Complete University Guide and 18th in The Guardian, 2018).

Remember, a UCAS exhibition can only tell you so much about a university. There really is no better way to get a sense of a university than to attend an Open Day. To discover what it’s really like here at UEA, book onto one of our Open Days
