Under a withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU, the UK will continue to participate in the Erasmus+ programme until 2020/21. Future participation after 2020 would be decided as part of the future partnership negotiations.
For UEA students studying or working abroad through the Erasmus+ programme in 2019/20
The European Commission has put in contingency measures to ensure both UK and EU students participating in Erasmus+ at the time of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU (currently 31 October 2019), will be able to complete their placement without interruption and continue to receive funding.
If a study or work placement is due to commence in 2019/20 after the UK leaves the EU, in a ‘no-deal’ situation, these students will no longer be part of the Erasmus+ programme but will receive alternate, equivalent funding support awarded through the UK Government guarantee. In the event that a student is placed at an Erasmus+ exchange partner institution that does not to continue to exchange with the UK outside the Erasmus programme, UEA will support students in sourcing a suitable alternative host destination.
UEA is making every effort to ensure students starting their placements after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU will have limited impact to their placement, however we are unable to prevent all possible effects.
Immigration Requirements for UEA students studying or working abroad in 2019/20
In a ‘no-deal’ scenario, students' study/work residency status in the EU may change. Students should consult the Government’s guidance at www.gov.co.uk to keep up to date on these requirements. Students may also wish to seek advice from their Erasmus host institution.
Universities UK International (UUKi) have responded to this situation by launching the #SupportStudyAbroad social media campaign to highlight and amplify public support for study abroad and encourage the government to commit to funding study abroad programmes in the event of a no deal Brexit.
For UEA students planning to study or work abroad in Europe in 2020/21 onwards
As the final Brexit negotiations are still to be completed, it is not clear whether UK universities will remain eligible to participate in the Erasmus+ programme. UEA is working with individual partner universities in Europe to ensure that students can still study abroad in the region.
Students wishing to apply for mobility within Europe for 2020/21 and beyond, should do so on the understanding that there will not be guaranteed or additional financial support either through the Erasmus programme, or the UK Government and should prepare based on the guidance provided for students commencing placements at international destinations outside of the EU.
Travel Insurance advice
If you have not already sourced travel insurance for your time studying or working abroad, please be mindful that most travel insurance policies will not cover you where you have already started your trip and are outside of the UK. We are unable to recommend a policy that is suitable for your specific needs however we are aware of a provider called World Nomads who may be able to help you where you have already left the UK.
University Statement 15/03/19
UEA is proud to be an international university with close ties across Europe. We are united in welcoming colleagues and students from across Europe and stand side by side with students who wish to benefit from study abroad, working with our European partners to enable mobility across Europe.
We want all study abroad students to continue to feel part of UEA's Study Abroad Community, regardless of any impact of Brexit on Erasmus.
As a UEA student studying abroad in Europe during the current academic year as part of the Erasmus+ programme, whether there is a deal or no-deal, there are no changes to your Erasmus+ funding to the end of this academic year. In the event of a no-deal, you will no longer be able to rely on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) so you should ensure your personal travel and medical insurance covers you for the period whilst you are studying abroad. You should also check there is at least six months remaining on your passport from your travel date if you intend on travelling to and from the UK after 31 October and before the end of your study placement in Europe.
As a student studying at UEA during the current academic year as part of the Erasmus+ programme, there will be no change to your immigration status and there should be no changes to your Erasmus+ funding from your home institution. You continue to be welcomed for your study abroad placement at UEA and in the UK. Please check with your home institution for any country specific information.
As a first or second year UEA student due to study abroad in Europe during the academic year or beyond, the eligibilty to receive Erasmus+ funding is currently unknown, pending advice from the UK Government once the exit from the EU is known, after 31 October.
Further information can be found in UEA's updated Brexit information on the Portal.
