The University continues to closely monitor developments as we approach 29 March 2019 and the possibility of a no deal exit from the EU. UEA is actively supporting Universities UK International’s #SupportStudyAbroad campaign and we are working with the Students’ Union to capture the student voice in UEA’s Brexit considerations. The Vice-Chancellor has written to both the Education Secretary, Rt Hon Damian Hinds, and the Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, Chris Skidmore MP, to lobby for support for Study Abroad programmes in mainland Europe.
In the event of a no deal exit from the EU, our rights when travelling to EU countries could change from 30 March onwards. We may no longer be able to rely on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). A no deal could affect current Erasmus+ funding arrangements. At this stage we cannot be certain of the outcome and UEA is unlikely to be able to take any further decisions until the outcome is clear. In the meantime students intending to secure Erasmus+ funding to enable their European placement might choose to refrain from incurring advanced costs, such as booking flights, until there is more clarity. We are committed to supporting our students to take the right decisions and will provide updates as soon as these are known.
Travel Insurance advice 22/03/19
If you have not already sourced travel insurance for your time studying or working abroad and are looking to purchase insurance, please be mindful that most travel insurancr policies will not cover you where you have already started your trip and are outside of the UK. We are unable to recommend a policy that is suitable for your specific needs however we are aware of a provider called World Nomads who may be able to help you where you have already left the UK.
University Statement 15/03/19
UEA is proud to be an international university with close ties across Europe. We are united in welcoming colleagues and students from across Europe and stand side by side with students who wish to benefit from study abroad, working with out European partners to enable mobility across Europe.
We want all study abroad students to continue to feel part of UEA's Study Abroad Community, regardless of any impact of Brexit on Erasmus.
As a UEA student studying abroad in Europe during the academic year 2018/19 as part of the Erasmus+ programme whether there is a deal or no-deal, there are no changes to your Erasmus+ funding to the end of this semester. In the event of a no-deal, you will no longer be able to rely on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) so you should ensure your personal travel and medical insurance covers you for the peiod whilst you are studying abroad. You should also check there is at least six months remaining on your passport from your travel date if you intend on travelling to and from the UK after 29 March and before the end of your study placement in Europe.
As a student studying at UEA during the academic year 2018/19 as part of the Erasmus+ programme, there will be no change to your immigration status and no changes to your Erasmus+ funding from your home institution to the end of this semester. You continue to be welcomed for your study abroad placement at UEA and in the uK. Please check with your home institution for any country specific information.
As a first or second year UEA student due to study abroad in Europe during the academic years 2019/20 or 2020/21, you will be able to take up your placement but will not be eligible to receive Erasmus+ funding in the event of a no-deal. The University is currently exploring options and will contact students due to take up a placement in Europe later this year shortly after the deal is known.
Further information can be found in UEA's regularly updated Brexit information on the Portal.
