Stars of the East writing a Nomination Guide

Please see below guidance on:

  • who can nominate

  • what we are looking for in a nomination

  • an example on last year's winning nominations for a learner and teacher/tutor award for inspiration.

Learner of the Year Awards

For the subject-specific learner of the year awards, it is our preference that teacher/tutors who teach/support with that subject nominate their star learners.
We will however accept nominations from peers and even self-nominations form learners themselves.

Teacher/Tutor of the Year Awards

For the Teacher/Tutor award we are happy for learners who have been supported by that member of staff or colleagues to nominate.
We will also accept self-nominations.

What are we looking for in a nomination?

On the nomination form, there is a free text box for you to write your nomination. In that box you have up to 500 words to write why you think your nominee should win an award.

(Remember this year there are gold, silver, and bronze awards in each category so taking the time to write an application is well worth it.)

Please see below a break down of the content we are looking for in a nomination and examples of each one:

Sport Learner of the Year 2020

Jasmin is an exceptional learner who has worked incredibly hard on the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport (RQF) for the last 2 years.

Being a role model and working with peers
Jasmin is a role model to her peers and will always offer help and advice should they need it.

Dedication and commitment to their subject AND Working towards future aspirations and career goals.
Her work is detailed, completed well in advance of deadlines and generally is the standard of a university student.

Going above and beyond the curriculum
In lessons she is always fully focussed, enthusiastic and completes tasks (even extension tasks) well ahead of her peers. Her desire to continuously improve is perhaps her most impressive trait and certainly something that has helped her reach the level she has.

Successes and achievements inside and outside of school
Jasmin has represented the college in a range of sports achieving national success in cross-country and women’s football.

Being a role model and working with peers
Recently Jasmin took part in our Sport Relief event and was proactive in gaining sponsorship again setting an excellent example to her peers once more.

Dedication and commitment to their subject
I have been teaching Jasmin for almost 18 months now and can't think of a single moment where she allowed her standards to drop and feel she deserves recognition for her exceptional work and attitude during her time on this course.

Teacher / Tutor of the Year 2021

How the nominee has gone above and beyond in impacting Learners AND  Examples of commitment to excellence in their subject

Terri is an incredible teacher and goes above and beyond for her students. No two lessons are the same and are all taught with a smile. Terri’s lessons are filled with laughter and it’s a great atmosphere for any student to be in.Terri always ensures that if you have a problem or are struggling with work that she is available either in college or via email for you to speak with her.

How the nominee has offered wider support beyond teaching the subject

However, it’s not just being supportive in the area of work that Terri makes herself available for students. During this difficult time, many of us have found ourselves struggling with personal issues and have phoned students on several occasions just to have a chat and be someone to listen for those students who need it most.

Positive results on institution or learners AND Examples of commitment to excellence in their subject

Just as she would in the classroom, Terri always ensures that her students are happy and healthy both in and out of college, consistently encouraging her students in everything they do and offering extra support where needed. Throughout exam season you would often find Terri checking in with students, ensuring that everyone is confident regarding the exam topics as well as, checking on every student before entering an exam that everything is okay and there is nothing she can do to support her students further. She is consistently adding extra materials, web links or useful information to our moodle page for students to use in support of their learning and work.

What makes them a good role model

As a result of her positivity and hard work, our classes have become a close circle of friendship that you wouldn’t normally see in your average classroom. Terri’s class is a joy to be in and I can say on behalf of my classmates she’s one of the teachers you look forward to seeing and go out of your way to be early to lesson just to get that extra chat and catch up in there.

Positive results on your institution or learners

Terri’s classes have always been a safe space to talk about any issues, whether these be regarding education or personal issues, and a positive and supportive environment. Over the last two years of being taught by this incredible woman I have learnt so many lessons, in education, in life, realising my own mistakes and taking action to improve my attitudes as well as skills such as empathy and having a positive mind set. I honestly believe that if it were not for the outstanding effort that Terri puts into both her teaching and her support systems, I personally feel that I would not have continued to push myself to the point I am at now. She goes above and beyond in everything she does, much more than other teachers I have known.

Examples of commitment to excellence in their subject

Terri has definitely been the teacher who has had the biggest impact on my education and the way I see things. I couldn’t think of any better teacher to be awarded for her efforts and achievements. She is quite truly, a star.
