Interested in finding out more about the UEA Mentoring Scheme and Student Mentoring Awards?
You've come to the right place.
Who is the mentoring scheme for?
The mentoring scheme is for students from participating schools in Norfolk and north Suffolk who have been selected by their teachers.
Each student has been identified as having the ability to go to university. We want to help them discover more and be inspired to achieve their best, wherever that takes them in the future.
Who are the mentors?
Our mentors are current UEA students from a range of courses and year groups who have applied to be a part of the programme.
Why use current university students? Well, one of the benefits of this is that our mentors can remember what it is like to go through school and college, and make those big decisions about the future. They are beginning to see the results of the hard work they put in at school, and can speak from their own experience about what they have learned along the way. In addition to this, we ensure that all our mentors are trained and have completed an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
What do they do?
Each mentoring session lasts for 30 minutes, and occurs once a week in school. Both the mentor and the student are expected to come prepared with something to talk about or work on together.
The programme covers a mixture of study skills topics, tailored to how an individual student wants to grow and be stretched - ranging from time management tips to confidence building exercises, developing better communication skills or learning revision techniques.
We have also set each student the challenge of completing a Student Life Project, to be presented at the end of the programme at our Student Mentoring Awards event. To see what's involved, you can view the briefing notes here.
Students are awesome!
Parents and guardians play a huge role in shaping a young person's future, and we want to celebrate and recognise this as the scheme comes to a close, and invite you to see what your awesome student has achieved.
We're running an activity day at UEA for each student from our participating schools on Wednesday 16th May 2018. Schools will bring students for a snapshot of university life, to see where they could be themselves in a few years' time. Students will have the opportunity to see university accommodation and take part in various activities. In the early afternoon there will be an awards ceremony with certificates, prizes and lots of celebration. We would love you to join us for this! You can register your attendance at the Student Mentoring Awards page.
We know that for some, this may not be possible, so we hope to send your young person back with great stories to tell of what they've achieved. If you'd like a short report of the project sent to you by email or post after this event, head over to the Student Mentoring Awards page to request one.
