Lecturer in Philosophy speaking at Cork Winter Warmer Poetry Festival
Philip Wilson, Lecturer in Philosophy at UEA, will be reading at the Cork Winter Warmer Poetry Festival, 22 November 2019 from his book The Bright Rose, published by Arc in 2015, a selection of German poetry from its beginnings around 800 until its flourishing in the mediaeval period. Old High German and Middle High German source poems face poetic translations and the whole volume presents an overview of a world in transition.
The reading in Cork will include the oldest extant poem in German, the anonymous ‘Song of Hildebrand’, as well as several examples of Minnesang [love song] by poets such as Heinrich von Morungen (d.1220). Poetry translation is about recreation not transference, and it is encouraging to see an important festival highlighting translation in this way, thus maintaining dialogue with the poets of the past.
