Biography

Marco obtained his Master’s degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology (2011) at the University of Milan (Italy). An internship at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology (South Korea) led him to undertake a research career. He then moved to the University of East Anglia for his doctoral training under the supervision of Dr Susan E. Matthews.

His thesis work revolved around resorcinol based structures with two different purposes. Firstly, to create novel, easily accessible, dendrimer cores with defined topological features. Secondly, to develop halogenated resorcinol derivatives as antioxidants and antimicrobials.

After completion of the doctoral studies, he took up an Independent Research Fellowship at the University of East Anglia (2015). Since then he worked with Professor Mark Searcey. He currently works on inhibitors of the protein-protein interactions between MDM2 and p53 (and also MDM4-p53). He also works on duocarmycins and their derivatives as antitumor therapeutics, with the purpose of increasing the specificity of these ultra-potent drugs.
