Description

An ideal introduction for students who are considering going into business, this module will develop both a theoretical awareness, and a practical understanding of entrepreneurship.  In scope, it extends to an outline of SME development, as well as how to produce a business plan for the launch, or successful growth, of an entrepreneurial business.  It also examines public policy as applied to the SME arena. 

Aims and Objectives

On completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the context of entrepreneurship

  • Explain the theoretical foundations relating to SMEs

  • Appreciate entrepreneurial significance in larger organisations

  • Comprehend the structure, content and application of a business plan

  • Acknowledge various strategies for financing

  • Develop a strategic perspective for a new venture.

 

Enhancing your cognitive skills will also enable you to:

  • Appreciate entrepreneurship and why it occurs

  • Debate and justify theory with peers

  • Demonstrate critical evaluation of the SME sector

  • Articulate an awareness of the surrounding environment

  • Display evidence of key skills for successful business launch

  • Understand differing types of entrepreneurial activity

  • Recognise the key stages in business development.

Learning outcomes

You will understand what it takes to launch or develop an entrepreneurial business in either a start-up scenario, or for an existing organisation, learning to analyse the surrounding business environment, and how to relate it to your own. You will also be able to evaluate the worth of an existing business offered for sale, prepare a detailed business plan for the first few years of a business, or for the growth and development of an existing entity.  Recognising the significance of finance and accounting to an enterprise, together with marketing and management, will also be a key outcome of this course.
