Key Research Interests

My main research interests are in the socioeconomic determinants and consequences of health, especially in developing and transitioning economies. More specifically, I have done work on the effect of social capital on health; on labor market consequences of poor health; on the relationship between obesity and socioeconomic status; as well as on social determinants of nutrition behavior.
I also do research on economic evaluation of healthcare interventions.

Selected external research projects:

Economic Shocks and Health Resilience: Lessons from the Russian Federation (with Bayard Roberts, Martin McKee and David Stuckler). Project funded by ESRC, commencing in March 2013.

Methodological and data issues related to estimating the impact of catastrophic expenditures related to non-communicable diseases on poverty in Latin America and The Caribbean region. Project funded by Pan-American health Organization (January-April 2013)

Health in Times of Transition: trends in population health and health policies in CIS countries (with Bayard Roberts, Martin McKee, Marc Suhrcke and Lorenzo Rocco). Project funded by the European Commission (2011-2012)

Suhrcke, M, Goryakin, Y, Jarrett, J and Niessen, L (2011) Value for money in health finance mechanisms: a review of the evidence and a conceptual framework applied to the AMFm. Research Report to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Contributed to the review of the evidence on determinants of alcohol consumption among young people and to the analysis of the sales data on the project which resulted in the publication by Anderson P, Suhrcke M and Brookes C (2012) "An overview of the market for alcohol beverages of potentially particular appeal to minors". London: HAPI.
Contributed to the study of the impact of malnutrition on the risk of being infected/developing tuberculosis disease (World Health organization, Summer 2007)

Contributed technical input and comments to the report “Management of Tuberculosis and HIV co-infection: Clinical Protocol for the WHO European Region" (WHO Europe, 2007)
